10 Possible Causes of the Obesity Epidemic
It's well accepted that reduced physical activity and fast food are linked to obesity. But the evidence that these are the main causes of obesity is largely circumstantial. To stimulate debate, experts suggest 10 other possible causes of obesity, outlined in the International Journal of Obesity.
1. Sleep debt. Getting too little sleep can increase body weight. Today, many get less shut-eye than ever.
2. Pollution. Hormones control body weight. And many of today's pollutants affect our hormones.
3. Air conditioning. You have to burn calories if your environment is too hot or too cold for comfort. But more people than ever live and work in temperature-controlled homes and offices.
4. Decreased smoking. Smoking reduces weight. People smoke much less than they used to.
5. Medicine. Many different drugs including contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes drugs, some antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs can cause weight gain. Use of these drugs is on the upswing.
6. Population age, ethnicity. Middle-aged people and Hispanic-Americans tend to be more obese than young European-Americans. Americans are getting older and more Hispanic.
7. Older moms. There's some evidence that the older a woman is when she gives birth, the higher her child's risk of obesity. Women are giving birth at older and older ages.
8. Ancestors' environment. Some influences may go back two generations. Environmental changes that made a grandparent obese may "through a fetal driven positive feedback loop" visit obesity on the grandchildren.
9. Obesity linked to fertility. There's some evidence obese people are more fertile than lean ones. If obesity has a genetic component, the percentage of obese people in the population should increase.
10. Unions of obese spouses. Obese women tend to marry obese men, and if obesity has a genetic component, there will be still more obese people in the next generation.
These other contributing factors deserve more attention and study. Even more explanations include: a fat-inducing virus; increases in childhood depression; less consumption of dairy products; and hormones used in agriculture. What do you think can be attributed to the epidemic?

The Food Truck Carnival in Anchorage was a popular success. Five trucks gathered in the overflow parking lot at Chilkoot Charlies from 11am until 3pm. Local station KTUU, channel 11, even did a news video. To see click here

Scientists in Britain unveiled the world's funniest joke yesterday at the end of the largest study of humour ever.
For the past year, people around the globe were invited to judge jokes using a five-point Giggleometer on the internet, as well as to contribute quips of their own.
The LaughLab experiment conducted by psychologist Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire, attracted more than 40,000 jokes and almost two million ratings.
As well as identifying the joke that appealed most to people around the world, the experiment - not surprisingly - revealed wide humour differences between nations.
Scans conducted on people being told jokes also identified the brain's laughter centre - a region near the back of the frontal lobes.
The joke that received the highest global ratings was submitted by psychiatrist Gurpal Gosall from Manchester in northern England.
Here it is:
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his cellphone and calls the emergency services. He gasps: My friend is dead! What can I do? The operator says: Calm down, I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.
There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says: OK, now what?
Many of the jokes submitted received higher ratings from certain groups of people, Wiseman said. But this one had real universal appeal.
Researchers found significant differences between nations in the types of jokes they found funny.
People from the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand preferred gags involving word play, such as:
PATIENT: Doctor, I've got a strawberry stuck up my bum.
DOCTOR: I've got some cream for that.
Americans and Canadians favoured jokes where people were made to look stupid.
TEXAN: Where are you from?
HARVARD GRAD: I come from a place where we do not end our sentences with prepositions.
TEXAN: OK -- where are you from, jackass?
Meanwhile, many Europeans liked gags that were surreal or made light of serious subjects such as illness, death and marriage:
A patient says, Doctor, last night I made a Freudian slip, I was having dinner with my mother-in-law and wanted to say: 'Could you please pass the butter?'
But instead I said: 'You silly cow, you have completely ruined my life.'
Marriage-mocking also featured in the top American joke:
A man and a friend are playing golf one day. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course.
He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer. His friend says: 'Wow that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You are truly a kind man.'
The man then replies: 'Yeah, well, we were married 35 years.'
Animals figured prominently. Take the number one joke in England:
Two weasels are sitting on a bar stool. One starts to insult the other one. He screams, 'I slept with your mother!'
The bar gets quiet as everyone listens to see what the other weasel will do.
The first again yells, 'I SLEPT WITH YOUR MOTHER!'
The other says: 'Go home dad, you're drunk.'
The survey revealed other fun facts:
- Of the countries rating the highest number of jokes, Germans, perhaps surprisingly, laughed the most. Canadians laughed least.
- If you want to tell a funny animal joke, make it a duck.
